Cash in hand for old jewellery or watchesAlgemene Dagblad 2008, MIRJAM CORPORAAL, UTRECHT What are her bracelet, rings and chain worth? To find out the answer Marga Sprong from Utrecht went to the Park Plaza Hotel on Monday afternoon where the British RoadshowEU was holding a fair. It doesn’t have anything to do with a show. It is simply the name of a British company touring all of Europe in search of jewellery and old watches. “We sell antique jewellery at a special market in Notting Hill in London, for instance, and we usually melt down modern gold bracelets and rings,” says the company’s Director Morne Botes. The most expensive item bought by RoadshowEU until now was an old Rolex watch worth 15,000 euros. Although many unique items of jewellery turn up at the fair, Botes also regularly comes across fakes. “It often happens that somebody offers a fake Breitling watch, for instance, but I notice pretty quickly. You feel it immediately: an original watch is much heavier. We also look out for the hallmarks stamped on real jewellery.” It’s certainly not very busy. Mrs Sprong is one of the few customers. She heard about the fair from a friend and decided to drop by. Out of her bag she pulls a small case containing a gold chain and several rings and bracelets. The valuer, Carmen Bäumler, offers 255 euros for them after she has examined the items carefully with a loupe and put them on the scales. “Most gold jewellery from the Netherlands is made of 14-carat gold,” she explains. Sprong is doubtful. “I don’t know if it’s a good deal because I’ve never offered these things anywhere else. But I’m going to go through with it because I don’t do anything with them and don’t get much pleasure out of them. Besides, the price of gold is high so it’s a good time to sell jewellery.”
Taget.
