Old jewellery makes money
By Frits Poelman
A British company is searching the North for expensive watches and gold jewellery.  Anyone with gold in a drawer can cash it in today and tomorrow.

GRONINGEN.  Yesterday, the first day of the British “Roadshow EU” in the NH Hotel in Groningen was visited by several dozen people.  Not many compared with other towns, says the young gold dealer Morne Botes.  But he is satisfied with the attendance nevertheless.   The buyers are ready again today and tomorrow is another day in the Van der Valk motel in Westerbroek.

Groningen is the last Dutch town where Botes hopes to do business.  After that he goes to Belgium and other European countries and later back to the Netherlands again.  He has done this for five years.  Just now, with his wife, his brother and two other employees, the young dealer of South-African origin is criss-crossing the Netherlands.  They are on the look-out for top-brand watches such as Rolex, Omega, Cartier and Longines.  It’s impossible to think of any expensive brand of watch that Botes and his team don’t offer money for.

CHAMBER WARNING ON CASH FOR GOLD

Gibraltar Chronicle, 8 March 2010

The Chamber of Commerce (Gibraltar) says it has recently become aware of unlicensed traders in the jewellery business and is warning the public to be aware of the potential dangers of conducting business with such unlicensed traders.
"First and foremost if members of the public want to sell unwanted jewellery to dealers, whether the dealers are local or from outside Gibraltar, it is wise to have items valued by at least two different jewellers to ensure that they get a fair price for each item," said a spokesman.

"If you are unhappy with the dealer's valuation do not accept it and tell the dealer you will go to a different dealer to get another valuation."

Secondly, the Chamber says you should only accept cash for your jewellery and never leave an item with a jeweller without a receipt. This is, it says, particularly the case if the dealer is from outside Gibraltar.

"It is extremely unwise to invite anyone unknown to them into their home to value any jewellery they may have," said the spokesman who said:
